“Can You Add Bacon To My Order”?

If that is the first thing you ask your server when ordering a meal, then I have the place for you!

At this restaurant, you NEVER have to ask!

“Brutus” restaurant is located in Montreal, Canada, and they have a strong “bacon POV”: they use bacon in all their dishes!

bacon-white sox

Let’s see that in print again:

THE RESTAURANT WILL USE BACON IN ALL ITS DISHES!

What does that mean, you ask? Well first, settle in with a drink:

Bacon Martini

A Bacon Martini!

Well, what did you expect? Like I said, THEY ARE PUTTING BACON IN EVERYTHING! If you don’t believe me, then stop reading now, because bacon is about to take over your life!

Let’s start with a small snack like this:

A 100% BACON SAUSAGE HOT DOG!

bacon sausage hot dog

Sure, there are lots of restaurants that make “all bacon” cheeseburgers and hot dogs…it’s not that this is a unique dish, but they sure make it look good!

For those who want a healthier alternative, try a salad!

bacon Caesar salad

The Bacon Caesar!

Looks healthy to me! As you can tell, Brutus makes a great plate of food! Oh, and in case you can’t tell, they serve this salad in a “bacon bowl!”

bacon bowl

Needless to say, this restaurant looks for EVERY opportunity to add bacon where it doesn’t belong….except we all know that bacon belongs everywhere, including dessert!

The Bacon Caramel Doughnut!

What a great way to end a meal…I’m not sure if Brutus serves “bacon coffee”, but that exists as well…

Go, Gizmodo, Go!

Leave it to Japan to celebrate bacon like this! A “bacon cube” burger is exactly what i’d like today, unless it’s a great “bacon-wrapped hot dog” like this one!

Of course,t here are “all bacon” hot dogs, but that seems to defeat the purpose of a hot dog – which I always thought was to take all the “excess, unloved meat” and stuff it in a casing. This hot dog would taste even better if it was slathered with:

best cheeseburger in the world

Behold The Greatest Cheeseburger Ever Made!

How can you argue it – that is one gorgeous cheeseburger! So where did it come from? Well, that question is answered differently by ANYONE who has a taste for a good burger…because we’ve all held a cheeseburger that looked just about flawless, haven’t we?

best cheeseburgers

Yes, that is one great looking cheeseburger! There is, however, a bit of a controversy in the burger world:

Is “bigger” always “better?”

nine patty cheeseburger

Can a burger ever be “too” big? They are fun to advertise, and enjoyable to observe, but are they really for eating?

Big Bacon Cheeseburger

Today we aren’t here to discuss “mega burgers”…instead, it time’s to go back to the basics, and nobody does “basic beef” better than the Windy City!

Chicago skyline

Chicago’s “Basic Burger Battle”!

Time to check out two places in Chicago that don’t go “big”, they go “basic”…burgers that are straightforward and delicious…let’s start at a local favorite located in the Windy City’s Lincoln Park neighborhood…

Muskies burgers Chicago

Muskies Chicago

Welcome To Muskie’s!

Welcome to a classic “hamburger stand” – Muskie’s has been on Lincoln avenue for almost twenty years, serving up great burgers to a ravenous neighborhood…in a setting that feels like the 60’s…

Muskies Chicago counter

Muskies Chicago menu

I love the “traditional” hamburger stand – Muskie’s doesn’t try to do anything more than serve up “char-broiled” burgers on a small grill…along with hot dogs, a fish sandwich, and a few other surprises…in a setting that says “basic, good hamburgers”…

Bacon cheeseburger and fries

I ordered Muskie’s “bacon cheeseburger” with fries…and while this bun looks a bit wrinkled, it wasn’t – it held up just fine, tasted good and was perfect for the burger’s needs….and at Muskie’s you don’t have to worry: they put two meaty strips of freshly cooked bacon on top…

Muskie's bacon cheesebuerger

Muskie burger closeup

The meat tastes char-broiled, with strong “beef” flavor…and the condiments are added sparingly – to enhance the burger, not camouflage it…lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup, muster and a hint of secret sauce – OK, something in the thousand island family – and it works – it’s a straightforward, delicious burger…

Muskies burger taste

The french fries come with skins on, freshly made to order, and a slight crunch and soft interior…

Chicago's best french fries

Muskie’s offers a few items loaded up – like a variety of cheese fries, plus milk shakes and floats as well – like I said, a great “hamburger stand”…

Muskie's chargrilled burger

Now, time to head to a “hamburger shop”…Chicago’s more modern approach to a hamburger stand…

Edzo's Chicago

Chicago's best burgers

Welcome To Edzo’s!

Edzo’s is also in the Lincoln Park neighborhood – and as you can see, Edzo’s also has a “hamburger stand” vibe inside…although they call themselves a burger “bar”…

Edzo's burger bar

best burgers in Chicago

Edzo’s Modernist Take On Things!

One thing you notice immediately: while Edzo’s offers the traditional burger, they also have some really fun “modern” takes on the staples:

Edzo's menu

Grass Fed AND Lobster Fries!

That’s right, you can upgrade your beef to grass fed, along with other upgrades – and yes, you can also order “lobster fries!” And of course, for the purpose of this review, I did just that:

Edzo's Chicago Lobster fries

But first, I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with the works, just as I did at Muskie’s…

best Chicago bacon cheeseburgers

As you can see, this bacon cheeseburger also came loaded up with fresh, crispy bacon…and cheese that just couldn’t wait to melt…

Chicago's best cheeseburgers

As with Muskie’s, the beef was juicy and flavorful, and the burger wasn’t loaded up so much that you couldn’t taste the meat…

America's best cheeseburgers

It’s All About The Price Point!

One thing to point out: these are NOT fast food burgers…they are not mass produced, frozen patties plopped down on a massive sheet of hot metal – these are char-broiled burgers, made to order…and you can taste the quality! Plus, at both places, you can watch them cook it too!

Best Chicago hamburgers

These burger and fry combos were both around $7, and they were very filling – Edzo’s and Muskie’s aren’t the “mega” burger joints that can charge $10 or more just for a burger…these are straightforward “hamburger stand” places that serve fresh burgers that taste great for a good price….

John Rieber burger review

Gaze Upon My Lobster Fries!

Well as I said, Edzo’s had a few modern takes, including Lobster fries covered with an aioli sauce…and yes, they were as flavorful and delicious as they look…fresh fries topped with chopped Lobster, then laced with green onions and aioli…

Lobster fries recipe

The Verdict?

Both places are great, and the lobster fries were terrific at Edzo’s – but I enjoyed the Muskie’s burger just a bit more…perhaps the thousand island sauce made the difference, but both will satisfy your burger itch!

Make sure to check out Edzo’s as well as Muskie’s – for “traditional” burgers that deliver flavor and value…and if you were wondering about what kind of burger I love best, one of my favorites looks like this:

John Rieber Frosted Flake Chicken Sandwich

Behold Badhappy’s Frosted Flake Burger!

Yes, look costly: those are frosted flakes….

Frosted Flake Chicken Sandwich

The legendary Badhappy Poutine shop in Chicago made this baby – until they had to close…but Chef Tom Kern is popping up all over Chicago, so I will update you as soon as I can on his Badhappy status…in the meantime, I can always bite down hard on one of these:

world's best burgers

Big Vs. Bagged!

This entire discussion has been based on how you like your burger: do you want something MONSTROUS? Would you rather have straightforward? I like them both, and they are easy to find, like this Kuma’s burger!

Here is how the website describes it: “the hamburger is flavored with plenty of not just strawberry sauce but a rich-looking demi-glace sauce as well. According to Lotteria, the strawberry sauce is made from a Béchamel sauce sweetened with Tochiotome jam and just a dash of Tochiotome liqueur. The demi-glace sauce contains various ingredients including a red wine-flavored condiment, bouillon and apples.”

Do I have your attention? Good!

It’s time to share the world’s great creations between two buns! First, here’s a primer on the art of “stacking” a burger, courtesy of the great Danes!

world's biggest burger

“Visset Salladsblad” Indeed!

Yes, this is a great great burger chart, clearly showing that the US isn’t the only place for a creative burger! That said, let’s begin our burger journey in New York, when I had the chance to try a “Five Napkin” Burger!

I ordered “The Original 5 Napkin Burger” – which is 10 ounces of fresh ground chuck topped with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and a rosemary aioli. This is what it looked like when it arrived at the table:

The first thing you notice when it arrives: it is JUICY. The cheese is beautifully melted, the carmelized onions glisten, the meat is oozing juice, and the kicker is the rosemary aioli on top….it GUARANTEES that you will be spilling stuff onto your plate…and I did…here is what it looks like AFTER the first few bites:

Folks, this is one messy burger. And that is a compliment!

Not full yet?

Taylors Refresher

Time To Head To Napa Valley!

On the west coast, there is another classic way to get your burger on – at “Gott’s”, formerly the legendary “Taylor’s Refresher”:

Gotts Bacon Cheeseburger

How about their bacon cheeseburger – stuffed full of meat, bacon, cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion and a special sauce…

Taylors Refresher Bacon Cheeseburger

This “Taylor’s Refresher” is quite a burger – wait, I meant “Gott’s Burger”….wait, what? Yes, there is a story even better than this burger!

To find out how Taylor’s Refresher became Gott’s Roadside, read my “burger battle” story here:

Time now to head to America’s heartland – Chicago Illinois, where I have a burger ready to “slay” you!

Kuma Too Burger!

Welcome To Chicago – Where They LOVE Their Meat!

Behold the “Metallica” Burger – yes, the burgers are all named after bands – the original Kuma’s started in 2005 – and they are already legendary for serving up “heavy metal burgers” like this!

Chicago's Best Burger Kumas Too

The “Led Zeppelin”!

Yes, Kuma’s Too is a big fan of classic hard rock and metal – and because I love the band, I tried the “Led Zeppelin”:

Kuma's Led Zeppelin Burger

OK, now THIS is a burger! A 10-oz. beef patty topped with pulled pork! Fried Pickles! Cheese! BACON!

Kuma's Chicago Burgers

It was everything you could want and more: it was beautifully cooked and juicy – to the point it dribbled down my arm – Robert Plant and Jimmy Page would be proud!

Big & Little Step Up!

Here are two other guys who may argue that THEY have Chicago’s best burger, and here is what they offer as Exhibit A:

Chicago's best cheeseburger

Yep, “Big & Little” have their homage to the Big Mac, but they call theirs the “Big Mack Daddy!” This restaurant was featured on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”, and they earn their place on anyone’s “great burger” list for such burgers as this deep-fried cheeseburger:

As you know, I LOVE to find the wackiest food on the planet, and this may be one of my favorites, but boy is it controversial! The Hungry Horse pub chain in England is causing a “burger brouhaha” with their wacky “double doughnut burger”! Here is why:

Little did Alex know that, as I looked for things that interested me enough to write about, I would find a world full of crazy food – from a “Tokyo Burger Tower” you see above to the best burger currently being made in Cambodia!

MIke's Burger Cambodia

Some people love these burger posts – so thank you for your feedback – and one, Jeff Greenfield, HATED a food story I posted: showcasing the spaghetti-stuffed hot dog!

spaghetti hot dogs

Not sure why, but Jeff said this freaked him out a bit…so now I have to keep looking for more wacky food mashups just to keep him on his toes…you know, like the “bacon cheeseburger-stuffed doughnut!”

Read all about the majesty of this by clicking here:

Yes, it has been a tasty three years…and I promise moving forward there will be much more of this:

1,000 slice bacon cheeseburger

Yes, this bacon cheeseburger has 1,000 slices of bacon, which is appropriate since this is a post all about numbers:

Closing In On One Million Views…

In the three years I have been posting, these stories have collectively generated almost one million views – it is exciting to see the response to new stories as well as stories posted a year ago or longer – and from the comments I have gotten, it’s nice that a wide range of topics are of interest…from amazing travel memoirs like this:

And of course, I have posted many times about my favorite musical group of all time!

Beatles Abbey Road pictures

The Beatles Are #1!

The greatest musical group in history is also making history for me! Here is the single most viewed post I have ever published:

The Beatles Lost Rooftop Concert Film!

beatles lost music

Yes, you can never go wrong when you’ve got The Beatles helping you out! My “Let It Be” post continues to be the most viewed story of all time on my blog, which I love because this Beatles documentary is probably the greatest “lost” film of all time, and you can read my entire post about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/04/06/let-it-be-the-beatles-lost-documentary-londons-live-beatles-rooftop-concert/

And yes, I own a VHS copy of the movie, which is one reason I love The Beatles so much!

Now, onto a “different” kind of movie…

42nd street

Three years ago, I discovered that certain stories got a lot of interest, like films from the “grindhouse” era of New York’s 42nd street: it was almost three years ago when I actually warned people which movies NOT to show at a family holiday gathering!

the sinful dwarf

Which, I will reiterate, is NOT a film to be shared with relatives…although “The Sinful Dwarf” is a classic example of “euro-sleaze”, a rough type of 70’s film…classic cult cinema that lives on thanks to DVD and on demand services – and I do have a fondness for wacky exploitation movies, like this:

mantis-in-lace

Grindhouse Cinema Lives!

Yes, it’s an acquired taste, but I have met a ton of passionate exploitation fans who enjoy stories about his unique time in movie history…and look, not only did I share the plot of “Mantis In Lace”, but I found this picture as well!

rays-hell-kitchen-biden-obama-mantis-and-lace-poster-2009

The fact that the President and Vice-President would be eating in front of a “Mantis” poster…I love the internet! Ii you want to more, just click on my “grind house gift guide” here:

There are a lot of people who enjoy this unique era of film, and I thank all of you who read my posts about this weird and wild world of cult cinema…

But I also love to travel, and Alex and I have been lucky enough to have some great adventures, which I have shared throughout the years:

eggplant recipes

Here is Alex harvesting a fresh eggplant from the Patricia Wells garden in Provence, where we cooked with this legendary cookbook Author:

Julia Childs and Patrica Wells

We got to cook on Julia Childs’ original provincial stove, and you can read all about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2012/06/10/tasting-provence-cooking-with-patricia-wells-food-and-travel-unite/

No matter how great cooking with Patricia and her husband was, it pales in comparison to the fun I’ve had with my kids as well…

JAPANESE BURGER

This is my daughter Jessica, who came along on a work trip to Tokyo and got to see some crazy japanese food…

http://johnrieber.com/2014/05/06/tokyos-build-a-burger-wacky-japanese-burger-ads-wildest-food-for-sale/

We had a great time eating our way through some of Tokyo’s great food…but it paled in comparison to this hilarious trip, which I call:

The “London Grind!”

Jeff Rieber London

My son Jeff went with me on a work trip to London, and got to work with the crew for a few days as well…which led to what we call his “London grind” adventure – a hilarious night out with some very drunken British business people, highlighted here:

This was a trip to film for G4 with Host Alison Haislip, and thanks to Alison for being such a great talent, and so much fun to work with in London!

And Let’s Never Forget The Bacon!

Yes, I have posted about ALL kinds of bacon as well…that’s because bacon is funny, and you “never cut funny”…so whether it’s a bacon wedding cake…

Or perhaps it is bacon that is utilized in a more “fashionable” manner…yes, bacon has proven to be very very popular, and the stranger the better!

I have also shared my love of music – and of course my admiration for the music and career of Todd Rundgren!

Todd Rundgren wacky outfit

I have been a lifelong fan of this musical Artist, and have posted many stories about his unique career. For example, did you know that he created MTV? Read all about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/08/02/todd-rundgren-inventor-of-mtv-a-hollywood-square/

And one of my favorite stories about Todd Rundgren was his special musical friendship with the late Singer/Songwriter Laura Nyro…

Reimagining Laura Nyro

Todd Rundgren AND Laura Nyro fans have been hugely supportive of the site, and I truly appreciate it. I’ve also met a lot of great people who have great blogs as well, and I appreciate everyone’s support and interest…

Stevie Wonder Live!

I also shared my review of Stevie Wonder’s “Songs In The Key Of Life” concert in Chicago, including this live performance of “Saturn” with India Arie:

And there is so much more to share!

Year Four Sneak Peek!

With more than 700 posts, I just keep finding more stuff of interest to me. So what else can you expect going into 2015? Here are some clues:

Rio movie posters - Zolton Hound Of Dracula

Behold “Zolton”!

Yes, I’ve got some classic movie posters to share, thanks to an incredible website that helps to keep these alive…that will be posting soon, and I also have some great stories about classic Hollywood, such as the legendary sex kitten Jayne Mansfield:

Happy New Year Sydney

Happy New Year!

Sydney Minick is celebrating her first new year, and I’m making a special burger in her honor! And why not? 2015 is going to be an exciting and DELICIOUS year – here’s proof!

Lamb slider recipe

Chicago's best cheeseburger

It’s “SliderFest 2015!

In order to launch the new year on the best tasting note possible, I plan to make five different international sliders, and as always, I have the recipes to share with you!

world's biggest burger

Study this chart: it’s a beautiful thing. But big massive burgers aren’t he point right now – sliders are three bites – you enjoy one, and then you try another – a different flavor…with sliders you can go around the world in your mouth!

fry slider

Fry One On!

OK, I admit it: I LOVE a slider with french fries and tartar sauce…I make them all the time and I’m not ashamed. But now I have another reason to try some new sliders – and I want to share all of them with you – thanks to Sydney!

cmas 2014 sydney

Sydney Had A Little Lamb!

My gorgeous grand-daughter Sydney just turned six months old, and is therefore celebrating her FIRST New Year’s Day! So what better way to celebrate than with a Lamb slider in honor of her!

lamb-slider recipe

I made these lamb sliders for the first time at my daughter Jessica’s “BABY Q”, her way of doing a baby shower…they were delicious! And they are easy: for the patty, just mix ground lamb with onion, garlic, mint, parsley and salt and pepper…

Cucumber yoghurt with raisins

Top With Some Tzatziki Sauce!

Yes, a cool yogurt cucumber sauce is all you need to add to this burger to make it great!

1 (16 ounce) container low-fat plain yogurt
1 cucumber, peeled, seeded, and grated
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
salt and pepper to taste

Combine the yogurt, cucumber, garlic, parsley, mint, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Top the burger with this cool sauce and you are “lamb-tacular”! And I added some avocado to mine and here it is!

Lamb slider recipe

There you go, Sydney, your first slider! While Sydney’s not quite ready to join the slider fun yet, this is still a great burger to share with friends! And there is more to share as well: let’s go around the world for some great slider fun – I mean, how can you argue with Marilyn!

The World’s Best International Sliders!

I love to travel. When I do, I always eat local…but I have noticed that many countries around the world are making burgers….and the Japanese have taken it to the max!

lotteria-burger-ad

While the hilarious Lotteria restaurant chain in Japan loves to offer up burgers like this, a slider ISN’T about the meat.

Lotteria strawberry hamburger

“It’s All About The Topping!”

The key to an international slider is what goes ON the meat! Whether it’s cheese, spices or sauces, it is all about what adds a unique flavor to the basic hamburger patty. As for the bun, I make sliders by using small dinner rolls, but there are many specialty stores that carry slider buns as well.

best cheeseburger in the world

Your basic hamburger uses good quality ground beef with at least 15% fat content, to ensure lots of juicy flavor. I put minced onion in as well, and I use minced garlic as well. I also like to use a fun salt – like pink Hawaiian sea salt, and a fair amount of pepper.

hamburger slider

That’s it for me – upon this temple of meat, these international slider recipes add unique ingredients that give them a special flavor…have fun, it’s time to head around the world!

best burger recipes

Spice It Up! Indian Sliders

Lots of indian spices make this stand out. As the picture above shows, you can also add some grilled onions to this, but the key is spice, spice baby. Here is a recipe that lays out the unique flavors to add to your slider:

indian burger recipes

3 lbs ground beef
1 tablespoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon garam masala
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons fresh ginger, peeled and minced
1/4 cup minced scallion top
1/2 cup firmly packed chopped cilantro leaf

Grill your burger with all of these spices inside the meat, then top with some scallion and chopped cilantro. No cheese required!

But now here’s a burger that is ALL about the cheese!

Mai Oui? Why Not, It’s Your Burger! The French Slider

The definition of a French slider is blue cheese, and blue cheese ONLY – take your regular hamburger, and fold in crumbled blue cheese into the meat before you grill. What happens is the cheese melts while the meat is cooking, creating a blue creaminess that oozes out of the meat as you bite it…

French blue cheese burger

…and the stuff that oozes out while cooking is even better. Score! If you want to go crazy you can wipe a smear of foie gras on the bun as well, but I don’t add anything else.

Late Night Snack In Barcelona – The Spanish Slider! – Hamburguesa!

Spanish flavors take this slider to a whole new level – as always, start with your traditional hamburger patty. The key here are the condiments.

The topping here is an olive tapenade, that gets spread on top of the cooked slider – you can find recipes for making tapendade, or you can buy it in a jar, but it includes black olives, capers, anchovies, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice – cook the burger first, and after you turn it add a slice of Manchego cheese and Jamón – Iberico ham – prosciutto-like ham!

Spanish burger recipe

Let the cheese melt as the burger cooks and the ham warms up…Take a bite and you will wake up in Barcelona!

Got Some Seoul? Kimchi Sliders!

When I was in Seoul, we ate every night at a korean BBQ, where you grill your own meats and seafood on the round grill embedded in your table, then wrap the grilled food around lettuce or thinly sliced pickled vegetables.

Taking that as an inspiration, I have a great recipe here for Korean sliders – which can be made with grilled sliced beef, upon which you add pickled cucumbers, a splash of rice vinegar and kimchi. Thanks to the website The Chubby Vegetarian, you can also do a version without meat at all, or just pile it all on!

kimchi burger recipe

Korean BBQ Sliders (Makes 6)
Recipe from The Chubby Vegetarian website!

1 tablespoon each of soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil (mixed)
3 green onions (thinly sliced)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 large portobello mushroom cap (thinly sliced)
6 slider buns
mayo
Vegetarian Kimchi – you can buy pre-made
half of an English cucumber (sliced longways using a vegetable peeler)

Get a frying pan screaming hot, and add the vegetable oil. Once it starts smoking, add the sliced mushrooms and cook for about a minute or until they start to brown. Turn the mushrooms in the pan and add the soy sauce mixture and the green onions. Continually move the mixture around for a few seconds then remove from heat. Divide mushrooms among the buns, and top with about a tablespoon of kimchi and a few slices of cucumber. I love these with or without meat!

THE WASABI-AVOCADO Japanese Slider!

I read about this over the holidays and I made one…it was delicious! By using wasabi mayonaise, you get the flavor without too much of the heat, but buy some extra and amp it up as you choose!

wasabi mayonaise recipe

It is very simple: just cook a slider patty as usual…no cheese needed. After you turn the patty, add some sliced avocado for a moment to warm it up, and once you put it on the bun, wipe a heavy dose of wasabi mayonaise on the top bun.

avocados

The coolness of the fresh avocado goes perfectly against the spicy wasabi mayo.

Trader Joe’s sells it, or buy some great mayo and wasabi and mix it together to the strength you can handle…this is delicious with a Sapporo!

30000 calorie burger

The All-American Bacon-Cheeseburger Slider!

What can I say? Here is a burger that never fails to satisfy. Just toast the bun, cook the burger, add the cheese, let it melt, put it on the bun with some or ALL of the added ingredients, and you are set!

Top Bun
Cheese – melted and dripping
Bacon! Bacon! Bacon!
Slider Patty
Tomato
Pickle
Mayonaise, mayonaise, mayonaise!
Bottom Bun

See that? DO NOT DEVIATE – this is perfection.

Australian hamburger recipe

G’Day Mate! The Perfect Australian Sliders!

An Aussie slider is just like ours, with two key differences. They add a slice of beetroot – OK, we call it beet, they call it beetroot – underneath the burger. It adds a great, slightly sweet and nutty flavor to the taste.

sliced beet recipes

Everything else is the same – add cheddar cheese, tomato, lettuce if you like – and if you want to go totally Aussie, take the second step to complete fulfillment – add a fried egg on top….the best!

And finally…THE BEST SIDE DISHES IN THE WORLD!

When you are enjoying sliders, you can make salads and vegetables, but why not just serve the greatest invention in the world: TATER TOTS! Just buy them frozen and bake them up and you are done!

best Tater tot recipe

Or try this: a tater tot casserole, which is basically baked mac-n-cheese with tater tots added!

And if you want 2015 to be full of good things, then here is all you have to do:

best hoppin' john recipe

Happy New Year And A “Hoppin’ John” To You All!

Of course, you MUST include some “Hoppin’ John” as well…as my friend and terrific Author Michael Ruhlman says, “this ‘Hoppin’ John’ recipe is a dish from the American south featuring black-eyed peas, often included in southern food and soul food recipes, traditionally served on New Year’s Day by those angling for good fortune all year long.”

I mean….REAL GOOD?

review shake shack

Of course it does…and it’s the fastest growing taste sensation in America!

Time to do the “Shake Shack!”

best burger shake shack

Biting Down On Shake Shack’s Gooey Goodness!

As Shake Shack continues to expand across the planet, I thought it was time to bite down on a burger myself and see what the excitement was all about!

And guess what? It’s all about THIS!

Burger recipes

Here is how the company describes itself:

“Shake Shack sprouted from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in Manhattan to support the Madison Square Park Conservancy’s first art installation. The cart was quite the success, with Shack Fans lined up daily for three summers.”

Shake_Shack_Madison_Square

“In 2004, the bid was won to open a permanent kiosk in the Park: Shake Shack was born. This modern day “roadside” burger stand serves up the most delicious burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard, shakes, beer, wine and more.”

bacon cheeseburger recipes

“An instant neighborhood fixture, Shake Shack welcomed people from all over the city, country and world who gathered together to enjoy fresh, simple, high-quality versions of the classics in a majestic setting. The rest, as they say, is burger history.”

best burgers Shake Shack restaurants

There are multiple Shacks in New York and New Jersey, as well as Washington DC and now one in Chicago as well, plus many more open and on the way.

best burger chains

Now that we’ve heard from them, time to step inside a “Shake Shack” and bite down on the best they’ve got!

shackburger

The “ShackBurger”!

Their standard cheeseburger is topped with lettuce, tomato and shack sauce – and it costs $4.95 for a single, and $7.65 for a double…and as you can see, they warn you that they serve them hot!

Smokestack burger

Time For “The SmokeShack!”

Here’s where you begin to see their approach to a burger: it’s a cheeseburger topped with TONS of all-natural applewood smoked bacon, plus a slightly spicy chopped cherry pepper and their signature shack sauce – oh, and did I say TONS OF BACON?

bacon cheeseburger shake shack

Yes, this was loaded with bacon…a single goes for $6.45, but I got the double for $9.15, and it was packed with beefy flavor…

Burger recipes

The cherry peppers and sauce give it a nice spicy and sweet tanginess, but know that you are getting meat, cheese and sauce…so it’s a ton of that and nothing else…

shake shack review

Still, it’s a Big sandwich, and it tasted great…and interesting fact about their buns: Shake Shack only cuts through them about 3/4 of the way, so nothing falls out of the bottom!

shake shack buns

This is a really good burger, but perhaps a better way to get a balanced flavor profile at Shake Shack is to bite down on this:

review shake shack shack stack

It’s “The Shack Stack” With Crinkle Cut Cheese Fries!

OK, here’s what I ordered on my next visit: their “Shack Stack” cheeseburger that comes with a ’shroom burger topped with lettuce, tomato and shack sauce, and it sells for $9.15.

best burger shake shack

Cheese-Stuffed Mushroom!

First, notice that this has much more color, thanks to the lettuce and tomato…and it also has a cheese-stuffed mushroom burger patty on top of the beef!

mushroom stuffed shake shack burger

This burger was terrific! Full of flavor, the cool lettuce and tomato were a nice addition, and of course, this is what happens when you bite into the mushroom patty!

cheese-stuffed mushroom shake shack

The cheese oozes out of the mushroom, giving the entire burger a cheesy goodness – and the mushroom has a nice “woody” flavor that balances well with the beef…

Shake Shack crinkle cut cheese fries

Along side my burger, I ordered the cheese Fries topped with a blend of cheddar and american cheese sauce, which sell for $3.90…

cheese covered crinkle cut fries

Shake Shack also specializes in hand-Spun Vanilla chocolate, caramel, black & white, strawberry or peanut butter milkshakes for $5.15, and also “Concretes”, which is a frozen custard ice cream with added flavors….maybe next time!

best burger in America

Does “Shake Shack” make the best burger in America? You’ll get an argument from lovers of In-And-Out, and certainly from the crazy chefs at Chicago’s Kumas:

Behold The Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift – BACON!

There are all kinds of sexy ways to say “I love you” this Valentine’s day – like this amazingly creative use of bacon!

heart shaped bacon

I knew I was “overdue on bacon”, so I put on my “INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER” cap and did some delicious digging for you: and I found the recipe for bacon roses!

unique bacon gifsts bacon roses

I found this on the great website “TheDailyBacon”…and they posted a recipe for how to win your lover’s heart – through the magic of bacon:

Make Your Own Bacon Roses!

You’ll need: bacon, fake flowers, a muffin tin, toothpicks and tinfoil.

unique bacon roses

1. Soak the toothpicks in water (this keeps them from charring in the oven). Defrost the bacon. Line the muffin tin with foil. Turn the oven up to 400 degrees.

2. Roll the bacon to look like a rosebud, then stick two toothpicks in the bottom to hold it together.

Bacon-Roses recipe

3. Place the bacon rosebuds in the muffin spaces. The toothpicks should keep them from touching the bottom — you need that space for fat drippings.

4. Put the bacon in the oven. Cook 25-30 minutes.

bacon rose bouquet

5. Deconstruct the fake flowers. Pull the entire thing apart, get rid of the petals and put the stem back together.

bacon roses

6. Let the bacon cool, remove the toothpicks and stick the bacon bud onto the plastic stem. Voilà! Salty, crunchy flowers.

Now, if you aren’t quite so romantic, skip the design part of the process and go right to the bacon:

And thanks to the website “The paper mama.copm”, you can make bacon hearts as well!

bacon hearts

I love how simple and fun this is…not sure I can make scrambled eggs in a heart shape, but I will try anything!

If bacon’s not your thing – although I’ll never understand why – you can also have Giordano’s pizza in Chicago make you this:

Ready To Bite Down On Some Tasty “Frog?”

Solid investigative reporting has led me to THIS:

frog-burger

Yes, the Internet has given us more joy today – leave it to Japan to offer up a new classic meal in a bun:

The “Frog Burger!”

Here is how this madness got started:

Japanese aquarium

Over in Japan, Sega and Yokohama’s Sunshine Aquarium have a Deadly Poison Exhibition, highlighting 25 poisonous animals from all over the world. As “RocketNews24″ reports:

Japan tourist attractions

“To commemorate the event, the cafe nearby at Orbi Yokohama has created a special menu featuring what they call “The Frog Burger.” If a deep-fried frog sandwiched between pitch-black buns sounds good to you, then fork over 1,000 yen (US$8.34)!”

frog-burger

If you have tasted frog legs, you know they taste pretty good, so why not enjoy them between two buns?

This story was originally posted by Michelle Lynn Dinh, the great Reporter for “RocketNews24″…who also reports that the restaurant offers an “Earth” burger as well…

Japan earth burger

That is certainly more dignified, especially with the “earth” bun that evokes the oceans…I’d bite down on this in a second!

Kudos as always to “RocketNews24″, a terrifically entertaining website worth following!

And don’t forget, you have a chance to be part of Japan’s burger madness!

Japan shrimp burger

If you love Japan’s “Lotteria” burgers as much as I do, then time to cast your vote for their most outrageous burger!

lotteria-burger-ad

As “RocketNews24″ reported, Lotteria wants you to vote for your favorite burger, like the 9-patty monster, or the shrimp burger! Check out the entire story here:

Time to celebrate my two favorite burgers from Seattle – we begin with my darling Granddaughter Sydney getting her hands on a Dick’s Drive-In cheeseburger for the first time!

Sydney and her Dicks drive-in bag

sydney with cheeseburger

When are you old enough to enjoy a Seattle classic? When you have a strong enough grip to grab the bag!

Dicks Sign

Welcome To Dick’s!

“Dick’s Drive-In” is an institution in Seattle, and rightly so: their straightforward and very limited menu offers hamburgers, cheeseburgers, a “deluxe” , and their signature “Dick’s Deluxe”, which is two patties, lettuce and a special pickle sauce…

Seattle's best burgers

Nothing fancy here, just good flavorful burgers at an inexpensive price…like their cheeseburger, which has great flavor – you can taste the meat, and the cheese is real and delicious…

best Cheeseburgers

Dick’s also has terrific french fries, made out of fresh potatoes cut right in front of you! And they are delicious!

best french fries

I also love their signature painted cow – which hangs behind big picture windows – so you can watch them cook…and of course, I love their famous catchphrase:

“Where taste is the difference…”

Dick's cow sign

Dicks Hamburger Stand

Most people sit in their car outside and eat their “bag of Dick’s” – it was a Seattle tradition…

Dicks In A Bag

“Dick’s Drive-In” is so iconic in Seattle that there is a restaurant that pays homage to them in the most delicious way possible!

homage-to-the-dicks-deluxe

Welcome To Seattle’s Lunchbox Laboratory!

Yes, that is an “homage” to the “Dick’s Deluxe”, thanks to the inventive minds at “The Lunchbox Laboratory!”

Lunchbox Laboratory Seattle

I was lucky enough to enter the lab with my daughter Jessica, her husband Mike and my beautiful 6-month old grand-daughter Sydney, who seemed impressed yet not intimidated by the laboratory…

Sydney at Lunchbox

The restaurant, located on south Lake Union, loves to experiment with burgers…when you enter you are greeted by a sign with their latest “experiments”…

Seattle Lunchbox Laboratory

The restaurant is designed to spark memories of childhood – lunch boxes are everywhere…

Seattle's Lunchbox Lab

Mike got the “Hothead” burger, which sent him into mouth spasms as the pepper jack cheese was joined by a fiery jalapeño ranch sauce!

hottest burger recipes

And of course he got the nitro ketchup as well! This is one “hot” bite of food!

world's hottest burgers

That left so many options for me…there are a number of great burgers to choose from, but I had to go back to their “homage…”

Dick's Deluxe burger

“The Lunchbox Lab Homage To The Dick’s Deluxe” takes the simplicity of the Dick’s burger and supersizes it, while still paying respect to the distinct and crisp flavors of the original…as you can see, it’s a delicious bite!

Lunchbox Laboratory

Every burger comes with a wide array of side dishes, like fries, onion rings, a couple of differnt “mac-and-cheese” dishes, including oven fries, and my favorite, Tater Tots!

Tater Tot recipes

In keeping with the “nostalgia” aspect of they business, they also serve various flavors of “Kool-Aid!” By this time as you can see in the photo, Sydney was exhausted and needed a quick nap…

The Lunchbox Laboratory serves us great burgers, fun side dishes, unique drinks and a colorful atmosphere. They also serve a wide variety of seasonings, which you can use on your burgers, fries, or anything!

And it all leads to my favorite burger pic of the day – this shot of my “homage” – what a great burger!

Let’s begin with a tater tot topped with creme fraiche and caviar! This is from the great restaurant Archetype, located in St. Helena, California, in the heart of wine country…

Archetype restaurant St. Helena

Caviar Rules!

I love caviar, and I love tater tots, so this is a great great thing…peer upon it again:

caviar tater tot

The flavors of potato and caviar just sound right – and I found another example of this mashup as well, this time with caviar anchoring one end of a french fry:

caviar french fries

And it reminded me that I once posted a story about this unique potato/caviar combo from Russia of course – the caviar flavored potato chip!

Sometimes the best food takes simple flavors and combines them in a unique way…and in America, perhaps there is nothing “simpler” than this combo:

Our Dinner Party. Theme was breakfast.

Bacon And Egg Cups!

As you can see, this would be the greatest way to start your day! It all begins when you make yourself one of these:

bacon cup

A bacon cup is a thing of beauty, and you make them easily by draping bacon over an inverted cupcake mold…

bacon cups

Then you do a baked egg dish with the bacon acting as your “cup” and you are on your way! It’s just one way to enjoy an “incredible edible egg!”

Eggs are so versatile, I like them on salads, in noodle soups, and of course, on pizza!

And please don’t forget about my all time favorite food item – one that has made me re-think what it means to call something “dessert”:

The “Bacon Oreo!”

Yes, it’s the most majestic food item of all time – take some crispy bacon and nestle it right between those Oreo cookies, held in place by the silky frosting….what could be better than that?

Well, this for starters…

wild Bloody-Mary

Oh, that’s right, you need a drink – so bite into this Bloody Mary! It’s a strange new trend – finding a way to pack a drink with plenty to eat – like a roast chicken!
